1. Know Your Reference Number
Every Breitling carries a reference number that identifies the exact model, dial configuration, case material, and bracelet type. For example, the Navitimer Automatic 41 in black dial with rose-gold tone is reference A17326241B1P1 — a very specific combination. Always verify the reference matches the watch you're looking at, and cross-check it against Breitling's published specifications.
2. Check the Box and Papers
A full set — original box, warranty card, and service history — significantly preserves and adds value. The warranty card should match the serial number engraved on the case. If papers are missing, that's not necessarily a dealbreaker, but it should be reflected in the price.
3. Inspect the Case and Crystal
Look for deep scratches on the case or bracelet, and check the crystal for chips or hazing. Light polishing marks on a worn watch are normal, but heavy polishing can round off the lugs and degrade collector value. Modern Breitlings use sapphire crystal; vintage pieces from the 1960s–70s will have acrylic (hesalite) crystals, which are more prone to scratching but can be polished. Check for deep gouges or yellowing.
4. Verify the Movement
